Synaesthesia & Orgasm

This project will focus on how we experience orgasm in different ways, I want to see how we visualised our pleasure if it is related to colours, shapes and forms. I feel that the way we communicate intense feelings makes us all bit synaesthetic. My research will be based on interviews but I decided to go a bit further on the theory and read more about those experiences. I am really passionate about the way our brain works in these moments, it may be a bridge to our unconscious self, something more, natural and pure.

What Sex Is Like When You See Colors During Orgasm?

I read this article on Bustle that talks about extreme cases of synaesthesia during orgasm. Here they talk about specific orgasm experiences where people had actual visions, not only seen just colours but figures. It can be intense and interesting. But how can this happen?

“Shifts in brain state appear to occur to allow the orgasm experience to happen before the orgasm actually occurs,” sex researcher Nicole Prause, PhD tells Bustle. “The entrainment of these brainwaves appears to exist for some time and resembles meditative states. Meditation itself has been associated with some of the sensory experiences being described in synesthesia.”

In this state, the brain may lose control over sensory areas, which can prevent us from filtering out visual signals and other stimuli, “permitting the experience of some false sensory perception," Prause says... sex is more spiritual. This group reported more feelings of “oceanic boundlessness” and “visionary restructuralization” than controls.

This was a Vice article that talks more about synesthesia itself, it says that women have more than men. They also relate it to creativity and medication, especially when in the orgasm sense. It is a way of getting connected with your own body.

“For example, that synesthetes' brains have different patterns of neural connections than other people, that synesthetes have more serotonin in their brains than other people, and that we're all born synesthetic but most of us lose it over time.”

Even though they talk about people that have synesthesia I feel that everyone have a very interesting experience during the orgasm which I am interested in.

Truth is that most of us experience a state of trance, even if only for a short period of time when achieving an orgasm. The sense of satisfaction with the overwhelming physiological and hormonal firework is more or less extensive for almost everybody.
